White Knoll sees this as the time to claim region

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

It was 2 weeks ago when the White Knoll wrestling team defeated Region 5-5A rival Lexington at the Lexington Duals.

Last Wednesday, the Timberwolves returned to Lexington and defeated the Wildcats 43-31 in the Region 5-5A opener for both teams.

It was the 1st win for White Knoll over Lexington in wrestling in 9 years.

The Wildcats’ Dalton Snyder put his team in the lead with a 10-2 win over White Knoll’s Dawson Prevatte.

Lexington fell behind immediately as the Timber-wolves won 4 straight pins. Eric Lopez pinned Lexington’s Noah Boozer, then teammate Nolon Shannon pinned Daven Wood at the 1-minute mark in the first period of their match.

White Knoll’s Chris Kirk then made quick work of Zack Couture with a swift pin and Quinton Dodd came out of a reversal in the 2nd period of his match to add the 4th pin in a row, building a lead they would not relinquish.

Brady Leaphart, Peyton Mathis, and Walker Anderson won by pins in their matches for Lexington, but it was too little, too late for a comeback.

“We were able to get a lead and our lightweights took over,” Timberwolves head coach Kyle Kimrey said after the match. “Once we got that big lead it gave us the momentum, that was huge.”

Following the victory, White Knoll won the Blue Devil Duals at Dreher High School over the weekend. The Timberwolves had 4 of the 9 athletes who placed win their respective matches.

The victory helped them move up to 6th in the www.scmat.com Class 5A high school wrestling rankings.

This season’s Timberwolves team has the experience to succeed, Kimrey noted.

“We have a good group of seniors that I’m proud of, including Nolon Shannon at 120, Chris Kirk at 126, Quinton Dodd at 132, Jack Scott at 145, and Nick Taiste up top,” he said. “They have all worked hard and we’re ready to have a great season.”

Taiste, a Shrine Bowl offensive lineman, is an interesting addition to the Timberwolves roster as a senior and 1st year wrestler.

“Nick has been a big factor on the football team, but this is his 1st season with us on the mats,” Kimrey said. “Tonight he just wrestled 1 of the best kids in the state to an overtime match—he’s still learning, but he’s super athletic.”

White Knoll were host to Chapin Wednesday in Region 5-5A action.
