Who should start at QB for Gamecocks?

It’s time for a change. The University of South Carolina got drubbed for the 2nd consecutive week this past Saturday night against Texas A&M at Williams-Brice Stadium.

This team seemed uninterested from the jump and the offensive ineptitude was glaring with only 150 (150!) total yards. The Gamecocks are now 2-4 with 4 games remaining and they’ll only be favored in possibly 2 of those contests.

This Saturday, the Gamecocks travel to Oxford, Miss. to take on the Ole Miss Rebels and head coach Lane Kiffin.

Is it possible that South Carolina can win? Sure. No team has a 0% chance of winning. But it should be fully expected that the Ole Miss offense will put up at least 450 yards and drop 45 on the Gamecocks.

Defensively, South Carolina has talent in the secondary. However, the defensive line doesn’t generate any pass rush, let alone a consistent one. The linebacking corps has been decimated by injury and the secondary has a difficult time making tackles week in and week out.

Offensively, South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp has left the door open for a quarterback change this week. Collin Hill was pulled after 3 quarters against the Aggies, having completed just 8 passes to that point.

Are all the offensive woes attributed to the quarterback? Certainly not. On the 1st drive of the game, Hill threw an absolute seed down the middle of the field where Jaylen Brooks had his man beat on a post route and Brooks couldn’t make the catch.

The only reliable weapon on the outside for this offense is Shi Smith. Of course, Kevin Harris took the league by storm during the early portion of the season with his tremendous performances. However, teams are now willing to load the box to stop the run and force Hill to beat them through the air.

So whether it’s Hill, sophomore Ryan Hilinski or freshman Luke Doty, don’t expect the Gamecock offense to suddenly do an about-face and put up massive numbers.

This Saturday, the Gamecocks head to Oxford with a three game winning streak over the Rebels of Ole Miss.

Can South Carolina salvage the final four games of the 2020 season and save this coaching staff from being shown the door after the season?

All I can say is basketball season starts on Nov. 25th.

Lexington County Blowfish assistant general manager Justin Hall, radio host Rob Thomas and former University of South Carolina wide receiver Tim Frisby co-host “The 5th Quarter Post-Game Show” following Gamecock games on WVOC (103.5 FM or 560 AM). All South Carolina football games can be heard on WNKT (107.5 FM). In addition, Hall is the new co-host of the Love Chevrolet High School Football Show, also airing on WNKT on Friday nights.
