Why did this chicken cross the road?

Why did the chicken cross the road?  Inquiring minds want to know. My sister’s dog crossed quite a few busy Chapin roads, wandered into someone’s yard, kidnapped a chicken, and carried it in his mouth all the way back to her house. Poor chicken.

The traumatized but unharmed hen traveled to my house in a car,  bolted out from her hiding place under the seat, and hid in the bushes. We looked for her for two days, she was nowhere in sight. A neighbor asked if we had lost a chicken.  The hen had made her way across the very busy, and dangerous Amicks Ferry Road to his house. The poor hen has not crossed a road, but about 5 roads, in her journey to find a safe place.  We hope to find her before the coyotes, or a hungry owl gets a fresh chicken snack.

School starts back for teachers August 15, and for students August 23.  The tax-free weekend to buy school supplies is August 3-5, when clothing, shoes, school supplies, and computers will be 6% tax-free!

For a last late summer family fling, Melvin Park will show the movie Moana August 11 at 8:45 p.m.

The Splash Zone at Waterfall Junction at Riverbank’s Zoo has activities for summer family enjoyment, plus canoeing, kayaking, and tubing opportunities. Fruit and vegetables will be at The Chapin Farmers Market August 3.  If you take a short drive 5 miles out of town limits, you can leave the Farmer’s Market and enjoy the festivities of The Little Mountain Reunion, the state’s oldest folk festival, which started in 1882.

If you want to get practical advice on homeschooling  Herald 5,  a homeschool support network that covers Irmo and Chapin, is having a Back to School cookout for fellowship, information, and fun.  You can chat with experienced homeschooling moms and let your kids play.  The event is at Chapin Baptist Church Hewitt Pavillion August 11 6:30-9 p.m.

I want to say a heartfelt, and sad goodbye to fellow writer, author, and colleague Rachel Haynie, who passed on to writer’s heaven, where the first drafts and grammar are perfect,  and no re-writing or editing are needed.  I will miss her stories and her encouragement.
