Why shun Halloween?

Senior Living

Tonight is “fright night” when ghosts and gobblins come out. Boys and girls (and some adults) play dress-up on a fun night of fantasy, parties, scary movies and collecting candy.

So what’s wrong with all that? Well, as a Senior Adult pastor in a Baptist church you can expect me to denounce Halloween for its ties to Satanism and the occult.

Since this is a column for Senior Adults who do not participate in the revelries of October 31, let me offer a few Biblical reasons why I shun Halloween that you might pass on to others.

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 says, “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD.”

Ephesians 5:11 warns, “Don’t take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are.”

Philippians 4:8 admonishes, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things.”

Senior Adults face enough truly frightful things all year long. We do not need a night to honor the Devil and contemplate the things nightmares are made of.

1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Come home to Jesus, He’ll leave the light on for you.
