A woman who was hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 has died.

Lexington coroner Margaret Fisher identified Maliyah Smith, 19, of East Point, Georgia who died in the Aug. 20 traffic collision.

The incident ocurred at the 59 mile marker, between the US 1 and Highway 378 exits.

Smith was struck in the roadway after crashing a stolen car and running onto the interstate. She then attempted to jump onto a moving tractor-trailer.

Smith then fell under the moving semi.

She was transported by EMS to an area hospital where she died of her injuries, according to reports.

Smith’s family had reported her missing that same day. They told police she had been acting strangely before she went missing, WLTX news reported.

“It was awful,” an eyewitness to the incident told WLTX.

“The young lady hit us and jumped over in the left hand lane and took off like a bat out of somewhere,” Raymond Alford said.

Alford and his wife said they were hit by the car Smith was driving.

According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department incident report, Smith ran out of gas in a white pick up truck near Gilbert.

Smith then stole the car of a good samaritan who attempted to help her.

13 miles down the road, Smith hit Alford’s vehicle with the stolen car.

“A gentlemen stopped in front of me to help, he wasn’t in the accident. The two of us went to the lady’s car. She said her chest was hurting,” Alford told WLTX.

“I told her to stand by my truck and we were going up the road to see if we could help anybody and we heard an engine revving and she jumped in his car to see if she could take it.”

Alford said Smith couldn’t get the other man’s car to start because it was a stick shift. She locked herself inside the car. When the men attempted to get her out of the vehicle, she took off running.

That is when Smith attempted to jump onto a moving semi-truck.
