Workers must file state W-4

AROUND TOWN LINDA: 467-0334 ChuCk: 348-0243 lexingtonchronicle@gmail.com

The South Carolina Department of Revenue has created a state W-4 for use beginning in 2020.

W-4s – state and federal – are used to instruct employers how much tax to withhold from an employee’s paycheck.

This new state form is necessary because the 2020 federal W-4 removed allowances. The SC W-4 includes allowances and matches the state’s latest Withholding Tax Tables.

You should use the SC W-4 if:

• You start a new job on or after January 1, 2020

• You want to make changes to your W-4 on or after January 1, 2020

• You are claiming to be exempt from South Carolina withholding

News for West Columbia businesses

West Columbia businesses will soon adopt a new classification system.

The city will update to the North American Industrial Classification (NAICS) published in 2019.

The update means:

• Current 2019 Business Licenses will be extended through April 30, 2020, rather than expiring Dec. 31, 2019.

• The new license year will run from May 1 through April 30 annually.

• Ability to renew business licenses online.

• The license fee will continue to be based on gross income from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31.

An industry classification system facilitates the collection, tabulation, presentation, and analysis of data relating to establishments and ensures that data about the U.S. economy published by US statistical agencies are uniform and comparable.

NAICS ensures that such data are uniform and comparable among Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

For more information, visit www.census.gov/naics .
