CASTLE PINKNEY EXCAVATION: May 12, 6 pm (quarantine permitting) at SC Archives and History Center, 8301 Parklane Rd, Columbia. John Fisher with UofSC and SC Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology will speak on the small masonry fortification constructed by the US government in 1810 in the harbor of Charleston which served as a prisoner-of-war camp and artillery position. THESE EVENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED/POSTPONED WITH NO NEW DATE SET:

*BAG-A-BARGAIN: The Indoor Yard Sale sponsored by the Junior Women’s Club of Lake Murray scheduled for May 2 at River Bluff High has been cancelled.

*HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AWARENESS: Originally scheduled for May 13, the Habitat for Humanity Lexington Awareness Event will be rescheduled for later in the year.

*LEXINGtON WINE WALK: As of Tuesday, March 24 the Town of Lexington has been cancelled the 2020 Wine Walk and refund tickets already purchased for this year’s event. They will advise if it is rescheduled at a later time.

*LEXINGTON WOMAN'S CLUB GOLF TOURNAMENT: Cancelled entirely, not postponed.

PALMETTO SCRIBE AUTHOR MEET & GREET: Apr. 25 event at Lexington County Public Library, Irmo Branch, has been postponed. Check back here for new date. You’ll get to meet the Chronicle’s own Chuck McCurry and Jerry Bellune as well as numerous other local authors in a casual, relaxed setting where you can learn more about their works and ask questions. THIS DAY IN HISTORY

DID YOU KNOW: April 2 is the 93rd day of the year since it’s a leap year.

1792: The Coinage Act passed. This established the US Mint.

1863: During the Civil War, the largest Southern bread riot occurred in Richmond, VA today. These events occurred in March and April in cities throughout the South, thus the name. Women and men violently invaded and looted shops and stores.

1902: The first full-time movie theater in the US, “Electric Theatre” opened in Los Angeles.

1932: The 11th ransom note for Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr., son of the famous aviator, was delivered to Dr. John F. Condon.

1992: Mafia boss John Gotti was convicted of murder and racketeering in New York. He was later later sentenced to life in prison.

2006: 66 tornadoes broke out in the US across 7 states, which was the most in a single day in 2006. There were an additional 850 severe weather reports including straight-line winds exceeding hurricane force and hail as large as softballs.
