Chapin girls to play for state soccer title

Posted

The Chapin girls will play for the 5A girls soccer state championship after advancing past the first week of playoffs and beating West Ashley 1-0 on Tuesday in double overtime.

The Eagles will play Clover for the title on May 10 at 1 p.m. at Columbia's Memorial Stadium.

Chapin earned a spot in the big game after a fight against West Ashley. The two teams were deadlocked at zero goals at the end of regulation.

Freshman Elizabeth Kujawa had one goal this season entering the lower state title game. She left that night with two.

Kujawa found the back of the net in the 97th minute of the game to earn the Eagles their first title appearance in eight years.

The Eagles earned three wins last week to advance to the lower state championship game. In round one, Chapin beat Berkeley 7-0, then beat Ashley Ridge 10-1 before beating narrowly defending champions Wando 1-0 on the road.

Senior Darcy Ahern kept her Eagle career alive with the lone goal in the Wando game off an assist from Lila Bowers in the first half.

Wando got a few shots on goal but Chapin’s goalies made every save.

Chapin entered this week on a six-game win streak thanks to some stellar defense and goalkeeping. The team is outscoring opponents 29-4 in that stretch and has allowed just one goal so far this postseason.

The Eagles enter Friday's game with strong momentum and will look to earn the school its second state title this spring.
