Holiday tournament matchups feature in this week's basketball games to watch

Posted

The holidays are approaching, which means some boys and girls basketball teams across the county are beginning to travel and participate in seasonal tournaments, while others continue to test themselves against non-regional foes.

Here are two boys and two girls games to keep an eye on this week

Boys games

Lexington vs. Lyon County, Dec. 20, noon,  (Fort Myers, Florida)

Lexington is traveling to Fort Myers, Florida for the City of Palms Classic.

The Wildcats remain perfect this year, sitting at (9-0). The game against Lyon County will be one of the biggest tests the Wildcats will face this season.

The Lyons enter the contest (6-1) and average 93 points per game. The team has scored over 100 three times this season.

Lexington has dominated its competition this season, winning all of its games except one by double-figures. The team has received major contributions from its star players, Cam Scott and Jaxon Prunty.

This game will be a clash between two high-powered offenses as the Wildcats average 80 points per game themselves.

This will be the first of two games Lexington plays in the City of Palms Classic. It is also the first of two tournaments Lexington will play in over the holidays. The Wildcats will play in the Beach Ball Classic at Myrtle Beach next week.

Brookland-Cayce vs. Gray Collegiate, Dec. 20, 8:30 p.m.

Brookland-Cayce will host Gray Collegiate in the Cayce Roundball Classic.

The Bearcats enter the contest (6-2), and the War Eagles are (5-3). Both were winners last week and will look to carry that success into this match.

Brookland-Cayce has won two in a row and five of their last six. Last week, the team took down Airport 56-45 and narrowly escaped Silver Bluff, winning 47-44.

Gray played Hartsville last week and won by 52 points before beating North Carolina’s Northside Christian 60-50 in the N.C. vs. S.C. invitational.

A win for the Bearcats would prove their start is no fluke, and that they have what it takes to compete with top-ranked teams. For the War Eagles, this game is another opportunity to flex their muscles against a talented team in the state.

Girls games

Gilbert at Orangeburg Prep, Dec. 18, 5 p.m.

The Gilbert girls are off to a strong start this season, sitting at (8-3), but will have a tough task this week when the team travels for a rematch against Orangeburg Prep in a battle of the Indians.

Both teams average 55 points per game, but Gilbert scores the majority of its points in the first and final quarters, while Orangeburg Prep does the majority of its scoring in the middle two periods.

Gilbert fell 64-44 in the first contest between these two teams. The team will need to play better on both sides of the ball to pull off the upset this time.

Ahleira Leaphart has had an impressive start to the season, making a difference on both sides of the court. She is averaging 16 points and six steals per game.

Orangeburg Prep held Leaphart to just nine points in the first meeting, and her performance will be crucial if Gilbert wants to win this time around.

Airport vs. Chesterfield, Dec. 22, 4:30 p.m., (Rock Hill)

Airport will travel to Rock Hill and play Chesterfield in the Y.C. Winborn Showcase.

The Eagles played four games last week and will have two more before they meet the Golden Rams. The team sits at (7-4) on the season and has relied on its defense to win games.

Chesterfield will not be an easy team to beat. The Golden Rams are (7-1) and have relied on their explosive offense, scoring less than 50 only two times this season.

The Golden Rams are fresh off its first loss of the season but will have a get-right game against a winless Northwestern the day before the Airport game.

This game is going to come down to who can execute their strengths better. Airport will need to defend well to stop the Golden Rams, and Chesterfield will need to limit its offensive mistakes to score on the Eagles.

This contest will be the beginning to the end of Airport’s out-of-region schedule. The team will have one game the next day against Huss before resting until Jan. 5, when the team opens region play against Aiken.
