1 dead after vehicle versus pedestrian accident in Lexington area

Since 2017, 400 have died while driving, walking or bicycling in the county

Brian Austin Robinson, 34, of Lexington died after he was hit by a vehicle on March 24. This accident occurred at the intersection of Platt Springs Road and Sandy Springs Lane in the Lexington area.

According to the press release, Robinson was crossing Platt Springs Road when a vehicle traveling eastbound struck him. Robinson was pronounced dead on the scene due to the injuries he sustained. The driver was not injured and stayed on the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office will continue to investigate this incident.

In 2023, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office reported eight fatalities following vehicle versus pedestrian collisions. In 2022, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office reported five fatalities following vehicle versus pedestrian collisions.

The Lexington County Department of Public Works said that since 2017, 400 individuals have died while driving, walking or bicycling in the county.

In 2022, there were 7,522 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes across the country, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provided walking safety tips for pedestrians. These tips include: obey signs and signals, walk on sidewalks whenever they are available, walk facing traffic if sidewalks are unavailable, cross streets at crosswalks and look for cars in all directions, avoid alcohol and drugs when walking and watch for cars entering or exiting driveways.

Some safety tips for drivers to know and keep in mind regarding pedestrians include: look out for pedestrians at all times, use extra caution in hard-to-see conditions, be prepared to stop when nearing a crosswalk, yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and give them space to walk, never pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks, never drive under the influence, be cautious when backing up and follow the speed limit.
