An officer with the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department was hit by a car, and the two people in the car were shot after attempting to drive away during a traffic stop in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
The two individuals who were shot were transported to a hospital; the officer who was hit was treated by EMS at the scene. This all occurred on Dec. 10.
“The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department notified local law officials that two individuals in a Honda Accord were trying to pass counterfeit money at local liquor stores on Wednesday Afternoon,” the SLED release read. “Officers with the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department identified a vehicle matching the description and pulled it over for a traffic stop on East Church Street. During the encounter the subject drove away, hit an officer, and an officer fired shots.”
The Batesburg-Leesville Police Department requested the SLED investigation.
This was the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department’s second officer-involved shooting in 2025, and South Carolina’s 44th officer-involved shooting in 2025, according to the release. These numbers are similar to 2024’s, in which there were 45 officer-involved shootings in the state; none of the 2024 ones involved the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department.
The Batesburg-Leesville Police Department’s first officer-involved shooting in 2025 happened on Nov. 4.
“Officers with the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department were dispatched to the Enmarket gas station on West Columbia Avenue for a robbery,” the November SLED release said. “When the initial officer arrived, he entered the store after seeing the subject taking money from the register. During a physical altercation, the subject took the officer's TASER and used it against the officer. The subject also tried to get possession of the officer’s gun, and during the encounter the gun discharged. No one was struck. A second officer arrived and apprehended the subject. The subject and the two officers were transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.”
