Two Lexington County competitive cheer teams were named champions of their classification at the SCHSL state competition Nov. 22 at Colonial Life Arena.
Chapin extended its historic streak, winning its 19th state title, and 18th under coach Vicki Williams. The Eagles finished with 334 points, besting second-place Catawba Ridge’s 309 points.
“The team truly created their own legacy by hitting a perfect routine, while protecting the legacy of all the girls that had come before them,” Williams said in a press release. “They know they have to meet and uphold the expectations of what it means to be a Chapin Varsity cheerleader, which is not easy. The commitment and work ethic is demanding in order to carry on the tradition of putting excellence on the mat. We are so proud of this team and their hard work to protect the legacy of Champions!”
Chapin is the only competitive cheer team to have won championships in the 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A divisions.
This was Chapin’s second 5A Division II title, winning both years since 5A championships were split.
In 5A Division I, Lexington won its fourth state title in the past six seasons. The Wildcats finished with 329.5 points.
Lexington County swept the podium in Division I, with River Bluff finishing second and Dutch Fork third.
Irmo was fourth in 5A Division II.
In 4A, Gilbert finished runner-up to A.C. Flora. Airport was ninth.
