Middle school students charged in District 1

Posted

2 Lexington County schools reported threats before the Thanksgiving break.

The threats were made by students at 2 District 1 middle schools, Pleasant Hill and Meadow Glen.

Students have made at least 23 school threats in the county so far this year.

In the 1st, an 11-year-old Pleasant Hill student was charged with making threats after telling students he would stab them.

The student’s name will not be released because he’s under age 18.

He threatened to stab 2 students while on a field trip Nov. 22, according to Lexington County sheriff’s deputies.

No knife was found when school administrators searched the student’s person and belongings, according to an incident report.

The student was suspended, charged and released to the custody of his parents. He will appear in Lexington County Family Court later.

The student awaits an expulsion hearing with the district’s hearing officer.

As a result of the suspension, he is not allowed on any Lexington District 1 property or at any events.

This is standard operating procedure, according to the district.

The 2nd threat occurred Nov. 25 at Meadow Glen Middle School.

A 12-year-old student was suspended for threats against a school official.

According to District 1 spokesperson Mary Beth Hill, the 7th-grader refused to follow his teacher’s instructions to leave the classroom and go to the office.

When the teacher warned that he would call a school resource officer, the student said he was “going to take the cop’s gun and shoot the dean [assistant principal],” reports show.

The student was suspended and is awaiting an expulsion hearing.

The district encourages students and their parents to report any safety concerns to a school administrator, School Resource Officer, school counselor, teacher, or another employee.

Safety concerns can be anonymously reported through the district’s tip line at 803-636-8317.

Concerns can also be emailed to 1607@alert1.us.com .
