The December edition of the high school wrestling coaches' rankings is a big one.
Not only is it the first follow-up to the preseason team rankings, but it is also the first time the coaches release their rankings of athletes for each weight class in each classification.
In total, 11 teams and 35 athletes were recognized as some of the best in the state. Two local wrestlers were even named the top athlete in their classification weight class.
River Bluff’s girls team leads the way, coming in as the third-ranked team in the girls rankings. The Gator girls also have the most individual athletes ranked, with six.
Sophia Voudouris was the state runner-up in her weight class last year and is ranked No. 2 in the 135-pound weight class this year.
Nyla Charriez, Gracie Beaulieu, Tenley Heintz, Amy Robinson and Kyrra Shipman-Lutz are also ranked.
All three 5A Division I teams are ranked. Lexington leads all, coming in at 14th in the team rankings. River Bluff is not far behind at 16, and Dutch Fork was ranked 19th.
In Division II, Chapin cracked the top 10, sitting ninth overall. White Knoll is also ranked at 13.
In 4A, Gilbert is the only local team ranked, sitting 17th out of 20.
In the combined 2A/A rankings, Pelion and American Leadership earned a spot.
Gilbert’s girls and White Knoll’s girls round things out, sitting ninth and 11th in the combined girls rankings.
For the individual athletes, Dutch Fork’s Jackson Stocker is ranked No. 1 in the 5A Division I 132-pound weight class. Dayton Daniel is the only other No. 1-ranked wrestler in the county, leading the 138-pound weight class for American Leadership in the 2A/A classification.
Seven other athletes are ranked inside the top three. These are River Bluff’s Peter Vaporis and Amy Robinson; Swansea’s Daniel Aguilar, Patrick Larry, Aniya Ruiz and Hayden Moore; and Gilbert’s Rory Travis.
