Four local high schools were recognized for their various athletic achievements this season with a place in the Top 10 rankings for the Carlisle Cup. 

The award is given to the high school that displayed “the most outstanding athletic department from each classification” and is awarded by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association. 

This year, Lexington High, River Bluff, Chapin and Gray Collegiate all placed in the Top 10 of their respective classifications.

Gilbert, which landed at No. 9 in last year’s 3A rankings, didn’t make the list this year.  All  four of the schools that made the top ten in their respective classifications this season also made it last season.

Lexington High

The Lexington High Wildcats placed third in the Carlisle Cup 5A standings this season. The Wildcats won region championships in baseball, softball, boys and girls basketball and boys soccer.

The Wildcats experienced some playoff success as well, as they advanced to the Upper State bracket in both baseball and softball, the state quarterfinals in girls basketball, the state semifinals in boys basketball and the state championship game in volleyball. The Wildcats also won the state title in girls cross country and competition cheer.

Lexington landed at No. 4 in last year’s 5A rankings.

Chapin

The Chapin Eagles earned a fourth place finish in 5A this season after a stellar performance across the board in athletics.

Chapin collected three region titles over the last school year in boys and girls lacrosse as well as girls soccer. The Eagles soared to state semifinals appearances in girls and boys lacrosse as well as advanced to the Lower State bracket in softball. 

Chapin ranked No. 2 in last year’s standings.

River Bluff

Also a 5A state champion, River Bluff, appears on the list at No. 7 after a year that saw the baseball team capture its first-ever state title.

River Bluff also had success in boys and girls soccer as both teams advanced to the state quarterfinals. On the hardwood, the boys basketball and volleyball teams made it to the state quarterfinals as well. 

River Bluff placed No. 8 last year.

Gray Collegiate

For the second-straight year, the War Eagles finished in third place in the 2A standings of the Carlisle Cup. 

Gray Collegiate won region titles in football, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, competitive cheer and volleyball. The War Eagles also captured 2A state championships in boys and girls basketball, girls 4x100 relay and competitive cheer and finished state runner-up in boys soccer, girls track and field and baseball.

Gray Collegiate didn’t make the list for the 2020-21 season.
