6 Lexington County baseball, softball teams advance to Upper and Lower State rounds

Posted

Only a few Lexington County teams remain in the SCHSL baseball and softball playoffs.

Six local teams advanced out of the district round to compete for an Upper or Lower State Championship. Among those remaining are all three defending local champions from last season.

Entering this week, only five of the six that advanced to the semifinal rounds are still competing after the Airport softball team lost an elimination game.

The Eagles dropped their postseason opener but went on to win their next four games by a combined score of 46-19 to advance out of the district round. In the Lower State games, the team struggled to maintain its offensive success, losing to Florence and North Augusta.

While the softball team is out, Airport’s baseball team is still moving through the playoffs. The Eagles have yet to lose a game in these playoffs and are coming off a sweep over North Augusta in the first round of the Lower State.

To advance to the state title series, the team will have to beat Hartsville in a best-of-three series.

Gray Collegiate’s softball team and Batesburg-Leesville’s baseball team are also still on track to defend their championship titles.

The War Eagles improved to (31-0) this season after winning all three of their games last week. Gray will take on South Florence in the Lower State final Wednesday.

A second game between the two teams will be played on Friday only if South Florence wins the first.

Batesburg-Leesville is on the other end of the advancement scenario, needing to win two games against Clinton to advance to the 2A baseball championship.

The Panthers play both of their games on Wednesday.

River Bluff and Chapin are the other two area teams still playing baseball.

The Gators went from the play-in round and made it out of the district bracket, despite facing elimination the entire way. The team lost to Carolina Forest to start, but went on to beat rival Lexington and Carolina Forest in a rematch, before sweeping two games against Sumter.

River Bluff will take on James Island in a best-of-three series. The winner will advance to the 5A Division I State Championship.

Game one of the series is Tuesday at James Island.

Chapin will take on West Florence in the 5A Division II bracket, also starting on Tuesday.

The Eagles are (3-0) in these playoffs with wins over Conway and North Myrtle Beach.
