9 local students graduate Governor’s School

SC Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics saw 9 Lexington County students graduate last Saturday.

Katie Coghlan, Stevie Evans, Sarah Fowler, Leah Suzanne Hoffner, Edwina Page Lewis, Eesha Maisuria, Alannah Quinn, Melat Tarekegne, and Cameron Walker graduated Saturday, June 2, at the DeLoach Center in Hartsville.

Coghlan, child of Patricia and Tim Coghlan of Swansea, Fowler, child of Sharon Fowler of Gaston, and Quinn, child of Diane and Zachary Huffines of Lexington, will all attend University of South Carolina.

Evans, child of Cynthia and Anthony Evans of Lexington, will attend University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Hoffner, child of Lee-ann Ahders of West Columbia, will attend University of Rochester.

Lewis, child of Dorothy and James Lewis, Jr. of Chapin, will attend Clemson University.

Maisuria, child of Himaxi and Mukesh Maisuria of Lexington, will attend Yale University.

Tarekegne, child of Negist Abraham and Mulugeta Tarekegne of Columbia, will attend Duke University.

Walker, child of Nicole and Jimmy Walker of West Columbia, will attend Wofford College.

The 120 students who comprise the GSSM Class of 2018 hail from 34 different South Carolina counties and 76 high schools.

Nearly 70 percent of the graduates will remain in state to pursue undergraduate degrees.

In total, the Class of 2018 received $14.6 million in scholarship offers.

“Our wonderful students continue to do wonderful things, and we are proud of the hope and bright future they represent for our State,” says Dr. Hector Flores, GSSM President.
