Saluda Shoals Park is expanding a park for children of all abilities.

A groundbreaking at Leo’s Landing Inclusive Playground will be at 10 am Saturday, Aug.12 at Saluda Shoals Park East, 6071 St. Andrews Road.

The expansion of Leo’s Landing is to be completed next year, adding 2 acres of inclusive play space, said Meredith Bugenske, director and founder of Leo’s Pride.

The design resulted from brainstorming sessions with teachers, school administrators, inclusion nonprofit representatives, parents, community leaders, business representatives, board members and park staff.

Leo’s Landing was inspired by the Bugenske family’s son Leo who was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Leo urged his family to created a play space accessible to all children.

New features include:

• Connection Park – a low energy, decompression space including a reading and kindness corner, hammock park, hobbit village and a whimsical tree.

• Mogul Village – an off-trail adventure to encourage imaginative exploration, experimentation and play like running, jumping, rolling and climbing through various challenges.

• Mogul Outpost with a swing where children of all abilities can swing together and a play scape with intriguing challenges.

• Zip Krooz – a high thrill 2-way zip line with recumbent and disc seats.

Morgan Grimball of Grimball Cotterill Landscape Architects designed it and Contract Construction built it for $1.7 millions.

Sponsorship opportunities are open for residents, organizations and businesses. Additional information can be found at https://www.leospride.org/online.
