A view from the pew

I’ve read and reread several times the “Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation.” It is a document created by persons intent on cutting out a number of traditional Methodist churches into a more worldly reflection of their desire to become liberal in every aspect of their approach to life in general.

Before your read any further, let me unequivocally state that everyone, regardless of race, national origin or sexual preference, should attend and be active in a religious organization of some type.

As I see it, traditional Methodist church members consistently observe the interpretation of Scripture concerning human sexuality and same-sex marriages. A minority in the United Methodist Church wishes to:

• Change interpretations of Scripture to allow LGBT clergy and present Methodist church and pastors as totally LGBT.

• Portray traditional Methodist members as un-Christian and homophobic.

This assault on traditional beliefs and scripture understanding has been and continues to be an annual event.

However, this proposed document has unleashed a full assault at the highest level of the Methodist organization. By portraying traditionalist as wishing to leave the Methodist Church, the progressive minority has struggled to present themselves as being more inclusive, more-Christian Methodists.

I will continue to pray for my brothers and sisters to “love your neighbor as yourself” and put Christ first in all things.

David L. Busby, Pine Ridge
