Airport’s Lawrence worthy of more college offers

Nanders Lawrence has a had a career for the Airport High School football team record books.

Known as ‘Butch’ on campus, Lawrence earned a reputation as a versatile athlete. He played at the varsity level for 4 years, playing offense, defense, and returning kicks.

In the regular season, Lawrence played both wide receiver and running back for the Eagles, with 82 carries for 635 yards and 45 receptions for 566 yards, amassing 17 total touchdowns.

Lawrence’s 2019 Airport team went 10-4 in 2019 and advanced to the 3rd round where they lost to state runner-up Myrtle Beach.

“Nanders is very high energy,” Airport head coach Kirk Burnett said. “He never came out of the game. He was durable, too. He did not miss playing time with injuries.” Burnett also described Lawrence as small, quick, physical, powerful and hard to tackle. His attributes did not go unnoticed.

Lawrence was a co-captain of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives North-South All-Star game, representing the South along with co-captain Tyler Olenchuck of Dutch Fork. Lawrence had 8 receptions for 97 yards.

He also scored his team’s 1st points on a 4-yard run on a reverse as the South rallied for a 35-13 win over the North leading the South to a 35-13 victory over the North.

“He had a real good North-South game,” said Burnett. “He was one of the best players there.”

Burnett said he feels confident Lawrence will play college football. He said Lawrence is getting a lot of interest from Division II schools and looks to sign within the next 5-6 weeks.

“He is one of the all-time top 5 football players at Airport,” added Burnett.

Any college football recruiter would be smart to give Lawrence the chance to play on Saturdays.
