American Legion season nears an end as Lexington County teams fight for positioning

Posted

The 2026 American Legion baseball summer season is approaching its end, and Lexington County’s teams are trying to close the year strong and make a run in the playoffs.

Entering this week, all three local teams have some ground to make up as they sit at the bottom of their league standings. These deficits are not insurmountable, but it will take top-notch play and a little help from other teams.

In League 2, Lexington is third, coming into this week’s games (2-3) against conference foes. The team is two games out of first place and a game behind second.

Sitting a game behind Lexington is West Columbia in fourth. Despite being in last, the team could still technically finish first if other results this week go their way.

Both Lexington and West Columbia have four games left on their schedules after one game each was delayed last week.

Only one team will stay in the hunt moving forward, as their next series will be against each other.

West Columbia hosted game one on Monday. The teams then traveled to Lexington on Tuesday before this Thursday’s third and final matchup.

After that, all either team will have left is a makeup game before the regular season ends.

In League 5, Chapin/Newberry is also looking up at its competition. The team is (2-4) in games against others in its conference and sits two games back from the lead.

Unlike West Columbia and Lexington, Chapin/Newberry played all of its games last week and will only have three games left on its schedule before the postseason.
