Batesburg-Leesville grad signs with NFL’s Patriots

The football journey of Dontrelle Inman has taken him from one championship team to another.

He won a Class 2A title at Batesburg-Leesville in 2005. After graduating from the University of Virginia, earned a Grey Cup title with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

Now in Inman’s 5th season in the National Football League, he’s currently a member of the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. On May 10, he signed a 1-year deal with New England, who reportedly paid him $400,000 in guaranteed money to report to camp.

“I like winning,” Inman said via NESN’s Doug Kyed. “It’s one of those things like being part of a winning organization, you want to try to help the team win. That’s why I made my decision.”

Inman spent last season in mid-October with the Indianapolis Colts. The 6-3, 205-pound Inman caught 17 passes for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns from quarterback Andrew Luck. The Colts finished 10-6 and advanced to the AFC Divisional Round.

In 2016, Inman caught a career-best 58 passes for 810 yards for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. He was then traded to following year to Chicago before waiting on another opportunity from an NFL team.

“My whole career I’ve always battled,” Inman told the Boston Herald. “I always believed in myself to be the best I can be. So (the performance with the Colts) helped. I wouldn’t sit there and sugarcoat it and say it didn’t help. It’s always good to have tape, film, no matter what it is, for teams to look at you and you want you.”

Inman now has an opportunity to earn a spot on the 53-man roster and possibly play for a Super Bowl ring.
