Batten down the hatches, mate

The hurricane season is ready to blow in June 1 and run to Nov. 30.

The predicted number of storms doesn’t necessarily mean we will be directly hit in Lexington County.

We rarely are. But we do get strong winds and rain and the danger of flooding in low lying areas along our 3 rivers. The 2021 forecast is ominous.

Another active Atlantic season is being forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

While scientists don’t anticipate the historic level of storm activity of last year, they predict a 60% chance for an above-normal hurricane season.

The NOAA predictions include 13-20 named storms, of which 6-10 could become hurricanes and 3-5 could become major hurricanes of up to category 5 with sustained winds of 157 mph or more.

An average season consists of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

Check www.Ready. gov and www.Listo.gov for steps to help businesses and families prepare.

You can also download the FEMA app to signup for alerts.

If your home or business is in a low lying area, make sure you have federal flood insurance.
