Bees sweetened ancestors’ lives

Posted

Although often overlooked, bees were an important part of life in the 19th century in Lexington County and the Dutch Fork. Many farms around the county had beehives or bee gums on their property. They were often called bee gums due to the fact that they were made from gum tree logs.

Bees helped pollinate crops and provided honey and wax, which were essential to many households. Honey was used as a sugar substitute and used to lubricate thread. Wax was used for candles.
