AROUND LEXINGTON _ COUNTY

Best-selling Author Mary Alice Monroe made a return visit to Lexington last Sunday, courtesy of Lexington Main Library.

The visit, at the Lexington Municipal Complex, celebrated the release of her new novel, Beach House Reunion.

Library Director Marlena White tells us that Monroe weaves together a tale of the struggles and triumphs of the historic Rutledge family of Charleston. It is an illuminating tale of new beginning, resilience and one family’s enduring love.

Robin Bowers, executive director of Mission Lexington, and Anne Smith, director of community relations, received a surprise grant gift from Central Carolina Community Foundation last week. Foundation representatives made an unexpected visit to deliver the unrestricted $4,700 grant from the Milford H. Wessinger Building Better Tomorrows Fund.

Last week, Robin made the official announcement changing the name from Lexington Interfaith Community Services to Mission Lexington.

Instead of the usual Spring Prom at the Lexington Senior Center, seniors embarked on a bus trip to Spirit Communications Park to celebrate “Older Americans Month.” They enjoyed lunch, entertainment and the many vendors there. This was a first visit for many of them to this new attraction in our area.

Next year, according to Director Annie Mack, the usual prom will resume.

The Shepherd’s Center had its regular meeting last week at the Lexington United Methodist Church. Wrapping up its 2017-18 year of Adventures in Learning, the group reports another successful year. It will hold a volunteer recognition June 8, 11 a.m., at the church.

To the surprise of Chairman Kay Mitchell, board member Sandy Olson provided her with a birthday cake and everyone joined in singing “happy Birthday.”

Gary Baker reminds

There were many sleepy eyes last Saturday as followers of royal weddings awoke very early to watch TV coverage of the wedding of the year. Meghan Markle wed England’s Prince Harry in a spectacular ceremony in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. It was truly a fairy tale event.

You are invited to a Memorial Day Service, 10 a.m., May 28 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, 503 N. Lake Drive, Lexington. Refreshments will be served.
