Beware of red light runners

Posted

Have you had this experience?

You’re waiting patiently at a stop light.

Then as the light changes, you spot a fast-moving vehicle in your peripheral vision.

Fortunately, you don’t move as the driver barrels through the red light.

Had you moved as the light turned green, the speeding driver and you could have been injured or killed.

Chronicle News Editor Rose Cisneros experienced it first-hand in 2012 when a driver ran his red light causing her to t-bone his SUV at 50 mph.

Her car was totaled and she spent the night in the hospital.

The seat belt and airbags saved her.

At least 2 people are killed in the US every day by drivers blowing through red lights, according to a new AAA study.

Deaths from drivers running red lights reached a 10-year high in 2017 – the last full year numbers are available.

The AAA study found that 939 people were killed in red light running crashes in 2017.

Why? Researchers blame distracted driving.

With more drivers on the road, AAA said, more of us have cell phones and gadgets to play with on the dashboard.

Police feel hampered by lack of laws dealing with distracted driving and cell phone use.

AAA advised to be prepared to stop.

Use good judgment, and drive defensively

When the light turns green, don’t just step on the gas.

Act like a pedestrian crossing the road. Look both ways.
