Bill to ban restraints on pregnant inmates

Posted

A proposed SC law will ban leg, waist and ankle restraints on incarcerated women giving birth.

The SC House passed the bill last year.

The Senate has passed it on to the Corrections and Penology Committee.

South Carolina is 1 of only 6 states that doesn’t already ban shackling pregnant inmates.

The law would require pregnant inmates of state prisons and local jails only to be handcuffed in front so they can try to brace themselves from falling.
