Lexington Blowfish Fall in Extra Innings for Third Consecutive Loss

Posted

Just a week ago, the Lexington County Blowfish were swimming upstream in the Coastal Plain League West Division standings with a seven-game winning streak.

On Saturday, Lexington County dropped its third consecutive game to further hurt its first-half division title chances.

A throwing error by Brock Vradenburg led to a five-run 10th inning for High Point-Thomsonville, who held on for the 10-8 victory.

With the loss, the Blowfish (9-7) fell 4 1/2 games behind front-runner and defending CPL champion Savannah. They also fell into a second-place tie with Martinsville, which won its sixth straight game.

The game started like a continuation of Lexington County's lopsided loss to Savannah a night earlier. They were held to just one hit through the first five innings and fell behind 4-0.

Eli Weisner drove in two runs with a RBI single and solo home run. The other two runs came in the top of the sixth inning courtesy of a wild pitch by reliever Brody Hopkins and passed ball by catcher Reece Holbrook.

The Blowfish answered with a four-run rally in the bottom half of the sixth. After loading the bases, Vradenburg drew an RBI walk and later scored off a wild pitch, W.W. King Academy graduate Billy Amick of Clemson had an RBI single and Ryan Ouzts tied the game after scoring off another wild pitch.

High Point-Thomasville regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Jose Vargas reached first after getting hit by reliever C.J. Czerwinski, moved all the way to third base on two wild pitches and scored on Vito Patierno's single.

Down to its final three outs, Lexington County tied the game. After Lexington graduate Wells Sykes hit a leadoff single, he scored from first base on Braylin Marine's RBI double.

Vradenburg is intentionally walked by the Hi-Toms, who made their seventh pitching change of the game. After Ouzts is walked to load the bases, High Point-Thomasville gets a force out at homeplate and Turner Grau made a diving catch of a potential game-winning flyball by Jose Hernandez to end the inning.

Things went awry on the first pitch by Beau Ross in extra innings. Vradenburg fielded a bunt by Justin Johnson, but his throw to Colby Seltzer covering at first base went into the outfield and scored two runs.

Mitch Smith followed with an RBI single, Jose Vargas drew an RBI walk and Blake Sutton added a RBI fielder's choice to push the lead to 10-5.

With two outs, the Blowfish mounted a final comeback. Wells Sykes' RBI single and Cam Dean's two-run single brought the tying run at the plate in Cole Mathis.

The game ended with a broken bat groundout by Mathis.

Lexington County returns to action June 19 at Macon.
