Blowfish Win Fifth Straight and Move Closer to First Place

The hottest team in the Coastal Plain League currently resides in Lexington.

Thursday’s 13-5 win over the Florence Flamingos was the fifth consecutive win for the Lexington County Blowfish. They now trail defending Coastal Plain League champion Savannah by 1 game in the West Division standings.

Lexington County (7-4) led 2-0 after two innings following an RBI single by Braylin Marine and RBI double by Wells Sykes. The Citadel freshman and Gilbert High graduate drove in a team-high three runs.

After Florence tied the game in the bottom of the second, play was stopped for about 30 minutes for a lightning delay.

Lexington County reclaimed the lead once play resumed in the third inning. Ryan Ouzts, who went 3-4, doubled home Brock Vrandenburg and he scored on Cole Mathis’ single.

Mathis was picked off third base for the third out. Head coach Jonathan Johnson immediately argued the ball and was ejected from the game.

Pitching coach Matt Ribera replaced Johnson as head coach, marking the second time he's led the Blowfish to a win at Carolina Bank Field.

Florence cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI double by Aaron Staehely. The Blowfish responded with two runs off an RBI double by Vradenburg and sacrifice fly by Ouzts to make it 6-3.

A 3-run rally in the seventh and eighth innings helped Lexington County extend its lead. All three runs in the seventh came off two infield errors, College of Charleston catcher Jared Kirven of Lexington had a RBI fielder’s choice and Sykes closed out his evening with a two-run double.

It was the 14th hit of the evening for Lexington County.

Airport graduate Dalton Mims picked up the victory after four innings of relief. He allowed one run and struck out three.

The two teams meet again Friday in Lexington. It starts a five-game homestand for the Blowfish which includes three exhibitions, two versus Kingsmen Baseball and one against Catawba Valley.
