Lexington County Blowfish win second half West division crown, clinch playoff berth

Posted

With the Asheboro Zookeepers 4-2 loss to the Forest City Owls Monday night, the Lexington County Blowfish clinched the second half West division title in the Coastal Plain League and punched their ticket to the Petitt Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2015.

The Blowfish will now play a best two-out-of-three playoff series with the Forest City Owls to determine who gets to play in the Petitt Cup Championship series against the winner of the east division playoff series between the Morehead City Marlins and Wilson Tobs

The first game of the series will take place on the road at Forest City Sunday, Aug. 6 at 7:05 p.m. and can be seen on flobaseball.tv. Game two of the series will take place at Lexington County Baseball Stadium at the same time and can also be seen on flobaseball.tv.

If the teams were to split the two games, game three will take place at whichever team ends the regular season with home field advantage, which the Blowfish can clinch by winning one of their remaining three games (at Florence Aug. 2, at Macon Aug. 4 and home against Macon Aug.5).

The Blowfish have been on a hot streak ever since the end of the first half of the season going into the All-Star break. They’re currently 14-7 in second half play and are 26-17 overall, which is the best record in the West division and second best in the entire Coastal Plain League for the whole season.

Blowfish head coach KC Brown said he is proud of the turnaround his team has made and believes they have a good shot at making a special run.

“It’s a really special group,” Brown said. “Hats off to the guys. At the beginning of the year, I was worried that we weren’t going to be a good offensive team and so for us to lead the league in hitting, and I don’t know what other statistics there are, is a testament to the guys. We get after it every day and I feel like they’ve passed the bat. Yes, baseball is a team sport but it’s also very individualized when you get into the box but I think they’re a little more team oriented than most teams I’ve seen, maybe ever in summer ball, honestly.”
