A body found May 19 in the Saluda River in Columbia has been identified.

The man has been identified as Charles Clendenin, 71, of Irmo, the Richland County coroner confirmed

A call came in after 12 noon that the body had been found in the water in the area of Candi Lane, close to the Greystone Boulevard exit at I – 126. The river separates Lexington and Richland counties.

At this time, officials believe the death occurred naturally, but they are unsure how Clendenin ended up in the river.

Officials say there is no evidence of foul play. The coroner’s office has yet to determine a cause of death for Clendenin.

Michael Mayo of Palmetto Outdoor, a river recreational operation, said he was told the body was found in the water near Mill Race Rapids. Mayo cautioned river users to wear a life jacket.

— Terry Ward contributed to this report.
