Cayce salutes long-serving councilman

The City of Cayce is wishing a happy birthday to Cayce Councilman James “Skip” Jenkins. He is the longest-serving member on the city council. A lifelong Cayce resident, he has worked at CMC Steel SC for over 40 years!

He also serves on the Cayce Public Safety Foundation as well as the National League of Cities’ Public Safety and Crime Prevention Steering Committee.

Beginning March 30, the Cayce Sanitation Department will begin collecting yard waste on Wednesdays only. The schedule is being changed because of the corona virus crisis. Household waste, along with recycling and bulk item pick-up, will not be affected and will remain on the regular schedule.

Schools are closed, but that did not stop the learning. Riverbank Elementary School teacher Melanie Thornton drove the school’s Rolling Reading Room through neighborhoods, last week. Thornton read books from the back of her golf cart. It also gave her the chance to catch up with students she saw, though from a safe social distance, of course.

Because of the corona virus crisis, farmers are seeing their crops die in the fields and workers are being laid off because there are fewer buyers for produce.

So FoodShare South Carolina and Senn Brothers Produce Co. have launched Farmers2Neighbors to help maintain jobs lost at the SC State Farmers Market. The program includes delivery and is based at the State Farmers Market. Get more information at wwwfoodsharesc.org/farmers2neighbors.

Reminder: All City of West Columbia Parks were closed last week. The West Columbia Riverwalk and Amphitheater and Moffatt Street entrance parking lots were also closed due to flooding.
