Centerville Elementary School highlights OGAP success

Posted

At a Lexington County School District One board meeting, Centerville Elementary School shared insights on how the Ongoing Assessment Project (OGAP) has positively impacted its students’ learning.

Recognizing that students learn at different paces and in various ways, the school highlighted OGAP as a powerful tool designed to meet the needs of each student.

Developed over the past 15 years by a team of mathematic educators, OGAP offers a comprehensive approach to enhance student learning through targeted instructional strategies.

In this framework, assessments consist of additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning, fractions and proportionality.

With OGAP, students can take assessments, allowing teachers to see how they learn and how they understand mathematic concepts.

OGAP allows teachers to assess students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, providing valuable data on how each student learns. With this information, educators can tailor their teaching methods to address individual learning styles and needs.

OGAP equips teachers with resources, tools and professional development opportunities. Teachers can also receive training on how to effectively use equipment from OGAP.

Furthermore, OGAP provides a structured framework that includes visual representations for analyzing students’ work, problem-solving techniques, worksheets, pre-assessments, suggested routines and protocols.

A 2014 study in the School District of Philadelphia revealed that schools implementing OGAP saw significant improvements in both teacher performance and student outcomes compared to schools that did not use the program.

Centerville Elementary School in Gilbert has also embraced this approach, observing gradual progress in the classroom.

For example, a teacher at the school shared student work samples demonstrating how students, who once relied on drawings to solve multiplication problems, are now able to perform these calculations mentally or have found another strategy to find the solution.

Currently, schools in Alabama, Charleston, Berkeley County, Maryland Statewide Initiative, Minneapolis, New Hampshire Statewide Initiative, Omaha, Pennsylvania districts, Philadelphia, Prince George’s County and Vermont have implemented OGAP.
