Chapin boys fall to Eastside in late-night battle for the state championship

Posted

Hours after they were initially supposed to start, the Chapin and Eastside boys soccer team kicked off their 5A Division II state title match and delivered a full helping of midnight madness.

The game, which was supposed to kick off around 6:30 p.m., did not start until just before 11 p.m. When things couldn’t be decided in regulation, the match went into overtime, keeping the teams on the field until after 1:30 a.m.

In the end, it was Eastside that delivered the night’s final blow, winning a penalty shootout for the trophy, 3-2.

“I hate it for these guys because they work so hard, the coaches work hard, and I couldn’t ask for a better staff,” Chapin coach Bob Taylor said. “I really felt like we were prepared today, and it just came down to PKs in the end.”

Eastside stopped three of Chapin’s tries, including the last two that could’ve extended the competition. Goalie Brandon Jaramillo deflected the Eagles’ last shot, and then ran off to celebrate while being swarmed by his team.

Meanwhile, the feeling of defeat immediately hit the Chapin players as they tearfully returned to their sideline to accept the runner-up trophy.

The game was a stalemate until the very end. Defense ruled as each team scored once in regulation and only had a few chances to add another goal.

Eastside struck first, scoring 16 minutes into the first half off a header right in front of the net.

Chapin responded a few minutes later as Lucas Rogers scored on a penalty kick.

“We played and came back after the goal down, really showed resilience,” Taylor said. “Just couldn’t finish in the end.”

From there, not much happened as the teams ran up and down the field, waiting for a moment to strike.

After a scoreless second half, the teams played two 10-minute overtime periods, resulting in no goals. Then it became two five-minute sudden-death periods, but again, no goals were scored.

The Eagles started the penalty shootout ahead. Sam Szarkawski and Cole Keys got the team on the board, while goalie Cooper Hughes made two crucial stops.

Leading 2-1 through three shots, all Chapin had to do was go even with Eastside on the last two attempts to win. However, both of Eastside’s final two players nailed their shots, while Chapin’s last two missed, sealing the game.

Chapin’s quest for its first boys soccer state title since 2018 came up just short. The Eagles won three from 2016-18 while in 4A. The team won its first two in 2003 and 2004 in 2A under head coach Dick Hiller.

With the loss, the Eagles end their 2026 season (18-5) overall. Chapin went (9-1) in region for their fourth straight conference title.

While the season ended with a loss, the team will have a shot to come back stronger next year. Chapin is set to lose four seniors, but other than that, the entire team is eligible to return in 2027.
