High school lacrosse is winding down, which means the race for the region title is tightening up.
With only a handful of games left to be played, just a few teams are still in contention to finish first in the conference. After last week’s slate of matchups, two local girls teams can win the region, and one boys team locked it up.
Chapin’s boys clinched the region championship after earning a win over Lexington’s boys. The Eagles handed the Wildcats their first region loss this season and secured the tiebreaker.
The Eagles controlled the time of possession, winning most of the game’s faceoffs. This allowed their offense to get off a ton of shots en route to a 19-6 win.
Chapin entered this week (5-0) in region play with just one game to go. The Eagles were scheduled to play Dutch Fork this Wednesday to end conference competition.
Even if Chapin were to lose that game, the team would, at worst, tie with Lexington and River Bluff. With wins over both teams already, the Eagles would finish first.
Lexington and River Bluff also play each other this Wednesday, where the winner will likely finish second in the region, and the loser third.
Dutch Fork is looking to move into fourth, and could with a win over Chapin and a pair of Blythewood losses. Otherwise, the Silver Foxes are locked into fifth.
White Knoll is still winless in the region, but that could change when the team ends its conference slate this week against Spring Valley. The Vikings are also winless and looking to avoid consecutive last-place finishes.
The girls' side is shaping up similarly, except it was Lexington who secured the big win over Chapin.
The Wildcats begin this week (5-0) and are the final remaining undefeated team in the region. Chapin was right behind at (1-1), with many of its games left to be played. Blythewood was also in the mix at (2-1).
River Buff and Dutch Fork are just behind those teams with two losses apiece. River Bluff, (3-2) in region, lost to Chapin and Lexington. Dutch Fork fell to Lexington and lost against the Gators, giving River Bluff the edge in a tie.
White Knoll and Irmo are at the bottom of the standings and looking to end their seasons on a high note.
While most teams only have a few region games left, the end of the conference season is not the end of the regular season. Many teams will play a few final games against non-region competition.
Those games will not affect postseason seeding and are mostly used to fine-tune things before it’s win or go home.
