Chapin, Brookland-Cayce players named Athlete of the Week

Posted

Another action-packed week of spring sports is in the books, and as the season moves along, the individual performances are getting more impressive.

Some of the area’s top athletes are putting up amazing performances on a consistent basis. Whether it’s on the fields, the diamond, the courts or the track, Lexington’s brightest stars are shining.

This week’s winners for Athlete of the Week showed off their skills by stringing together some high-scoring performances and leading their teams to wins.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Eddie Wright

Chapin lacrosse junior Eddie Wright has been on a scoring tear this season.

Wright leads the team, averaging almost five goals per game this season. In seven games, he’s scored 32 times and has seven assists.

Chapin won two of its games last week to improve to (5-2), and Wright was a big reason why. In the team’s victory over Spring Valley, he had five goals and one assist. He topped that performance in a shutout win over White Knoll, scoring a season-high eight goals to go with an assist.

The Eagles will have a big test in their only game this week. Chapin will travel to River Bluff to play the undefeated Gators. The team will look for a big performance from Wright to pull off the win.

Hailey Jimenez-Cortez

Brookland-Cayce’s Hailey Jimenez-Cortez continues to be a bright spot for the Bearcats.

The team is struggling to start the year, entering this week (2-5-1) overall and (0-4) in region. Despite the overall issues, Jimenez-Cortez has found ways to get hers.

Brookland-Cayce snapped a three-game skid last week after beating Batesburg-Leesville 8-0. Jimenez-Cortez led the way with three goals and assisted on two others.

For the season, she is up to four goals and four assists.

If the Bearcats want to turn things around this season, the team will need to continue leaning on Jimenez-Cortez. Brookland-Cayce has a road game against Manning and a home game versus Airport this week.
