Chapin lacrosse seasons end in third round playoff games

Posted

Chapin High School’s girls and boys lacrosse teams came within one game of playing for a state championship.

The girls lost April 24 at Wando in Mt. Pleasant, 12-10, in the third round of the SC High School League Lower Playoffs. The Chapin boys also lost at Wando, 10-5, in the third round of the Lower State Playoffs. The boys loss was on April 25.

"We were a team that started slow," said Chapin girls coach Raven Thomas. "We started slow in the game with Wando, but we finished strong. That's how we've played all year."

The Chapin girls were 8-0 and finished first in 5A Region 4. The team was 11-8 overall and defeated St. James, 21-3 and Dutch Fork, 16-5 in two home playoff games before falling to Wando.

"We had a quality core group," Thomas said. "We had a small roster without many subs playing. We expected a lot of our girls and they responded. The outcome was not exactly what we wanted, but I'm proud of our team."

Thomas is optimistic for next season. She said her team will lose only two starting players to graduation: a defender and an attacker.

The Chapin boys lacrosse season ended a day after the girls.

Coach Jeff Mirgon said his team was "not clicking" in the playoff loss versus Wando. He said he was disappointed to fall one game short of a state championship face-off. Migron was selected coach of the year and Chapin's Tyler Green was player of the year.

"We may have had a case of the nerves early on," Migron said.

Chapin played well versus Wando in a pre-season match, but he could not find that magic in the playoffs.

"It was just bad timing," he said.

The Chapin boys, like the girls, were 8-0 and finished first 5A Region 4. The team was 16-2 overall, defeated Carolina Forest, 21-4, in round one and defeated Dutch Fork,12-9, in round two of the playoffs.

Migron said his team was dynamic on offense this year. He also said he expects the personality of the team to change next year.

"We have good, solid players returning for next year, but we'll rely more on defense," Migron said.
