Check for a connection before you dial

Have you seen the video of a couple teenagers attempting to figure out how to use a rotary telephone? It’s pretty funny to see them struggle to do something that was so simple to those of us who grew up in the 50s and 60s. They actually figure out how to dial the number but don’t pick up the receiver first. The look so confused when nothing happens. Trying to dial a number without first hearing the dial tone is like trying to build a relationship with someone before establishing a good connection. As a senior adult, what is the connection you want to establish with another person? Some people call it “chemistry” when it seems like a “dial tone” is present in a budding relationship. But initial physical attraction is not a strong enough connection to withstand all the static in our complicated lives that can cut-off relationships. The strongest dial tone between two people is actually a spiritual one. Let’s call this dial tone “holiness” which means “set apart.” Your most special relationship with another will be one that is set apart from the others. The most holy relationship is marriage, when two are spiritually made into one. (Genesis 2:24) I hope you have a good, holy connection with your spouse. And if you are without a spouse, you can still build a set-apart relationship with another person if you just make sure you have established a good connection first. Don’t rush in “dialing” into another person before knowing there is a good, spiritual basis for your connection, or you may find yourself in a one-way conversation.
