Lexington High School club brings joy to the community through music

Chords for a Cause, a club at Lexington High School, has been sharing the gift of music with their community, bringing joy to those they encounter through performances.

Founded by Christina Suarez, a senior at Lexington High, the club was created last fall with the goal of giving back.

Christina, who was born in New York and moved to South Carolina in seventh grade, has always had a passion for music. Trained as a vocalist for years, she found inspiration through her childhood volunteer work, singing at nursing and retirement homes.

This sparked her desire to create a club that would blend her love for music and volunteering.

The club seeks opportunities to perform in local retirement and nursing homes around Lexington and occasionally in Columbia. All members in the club are in theatre or chorus, coming together as instrumentalists and vocalists performing a wide variety of genres.

Chords for a Cause has already brought smiles to many faces at places like Lexington Medical Center Extended Care, Carroll Campbell Place, Lakeview Retirement Community and Junior League of Columbia Holiday Marketplace.

They are also preparing for an upcoming performance at the Ronald McDonald House.

“The smiles I see from the people we perform to and the joy in their faces is one of the best parts,” Christina said.

After high school, Christina plans to major in music education and hopes to be singing at the collegiate level.
