Author and Chronicle correspondent Rachel Haynie died Sunday.

She was the author of several books on local people and topics, among them:

• South Carolina Myths & Legends: The True Stories Behind History’s Mysteries

• First, You Explore: The Story of the Young Charles Townes.

• Cornfield to Airfield: A History of Columbia Army Air Base.

“Rachel was a thinker and a doer,” said Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune.

“She was a vital correspondent who contributed many illuminating and entertaining articles about Lake Murray, the old air base at what is now Columbia Metropolitan Airport and many interesting characters who live among us.

“She was a valuable contributor of ideas and strategies to attract readers and contribute to the community’s betterment.

“She was one of the first members of our Authors for Literacy group that raises money for adult literacy tutoring and one of the early contributors to the Chronicle Book Club.”
