Citations began Feb. 28 for Hands Free SC law

Posted

Law enforcement officers can now issue citations under the Hands Free SC law.

Following the 180-day warning period that began Sept. 1, 2025, violations are now subject to fines beginning Feb. 28.

A first offense is subject to a fine only. Additional violations will result in a fine and points against the offender’s driver’s license.

Penalties include a $100 fine for the first offense, and second and subsequent offenses within three years will be subject to a $200 fine and two points against an offender’s license.

The South Carolina Hands Free and Distracted Driving Act requires drivers to refrain from holding mobile phones or other electronic devices while driving to maintain focus on the road.
