Civitans raise money for mental health

Posted

The annual Civitan Oyster Roast to benefit Mental Health America of South Carolina was October 28.

Local Civitan organizations have been helping MHASC for over 20 years. MHASC is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit for those living with mental illness.

They address the needs of those with mental illness and promote the mental health of all Americans.

Jean Ann Lambert, the Resource Director for Lexington and Richland counties, said their mission is three-fold. They focus on advocacy, education, and providing services.

MHASC is the largest housing provider for adults with mental health disabilities in SC. They also offer day programs in Lexington County and Charleston for those in need.

Lambert focuses on educational programs. She provides training programs on suicide prevention and mental health first aid.

Joy Jay, MHASC’s executive director, secures housing for those in need. For their latest 4-cottage housing project, they received over 30 applications. That proves the need for their services.

MHASC is the second oldest state chapter of Mental Health America in the country. Having a caring board to help sustain their

work is integral,

Jay said.

In addition to the Civitan clubs who put on the annual Oyster Roast, MHASC is grateful to the musicians who helped make it a success. Brent Lundy, A Touch of April, and Jules are the three musical acts who donated their time and talent to the event.
