Last week Holly W.I.R.E. (Women Involved in Rural Electrification) held its fall meeting with Guide and Light W.I.R.E. groups of Mid-Carolina COOP. The guest speaker was Al Kulp of Central Midlands Retreat in Lexington.

The retreat is a housing facility designed for U.S. Veterans in partnership with the Department of Veterans Administration. Kulp told the groups the program gives transitional housing, education, training, and financial and employment counseling to veterans who are enrolled at the facility. Kulp said they give physical, spiritual, emotional and mental stabilization for veterans as needed. Services are provided by a team of professionals and volunteers.

CMTR has six cottages used for housing. Each of the W.I.R.E. group members brought hygiene, bedding, reading glasses, linens, and other supplies for the veterans.

Lacy Ridgell, W.I.R.E. Coordinator with Mid-Carolina, went over events coming up prior to Christmas. W.I.R.E. volunteers help with the annual golf tournament in October, Operation Santa Claus, and other fund-raisers. Prior to the meeting, W.I.R.E. members enjoyed a catered meal. If you are a member of Mid-Carolina Co-op, call 749-6471 for information on W.I.R.E. groups.

Jacob VanEtten, of BSA Scouts, Gilbert Troop 60, started a school supply drive to earn his Eagle Scout Service Project. VanEtten began collecting school supplies in July to be given to Gilbert Middle School, which he attends. Information on his project was given to Gilbert churches and businesses. This past Sunday evening, the Scouts met at their hut to sort out the donations. Troop 60 would like to thank everyone who donated the supplies for Jacob VanEtten to earn his Eagle Scout badge. VanEtten took the supplies to GMS on Monday prior to school starting on Wednesday of this week.

Members of the Gilbert-Summit Senior Center enjoyed their summer picnic August 16 with all of the Lexington Country Senior Centers. Members danced to 1950’s music and enjoyed a lively DJ. Everyone had their pictures made sitting behind a 1957 blue Chevy cutout that looked real.

Birthday wishes go to: Darrel Briggs, Charleston Rogers, Andrew Smith, Laura Lundeen, Tom Fink, Eddy Oswald, Mike Oswald, Michelle Stidom, Martha Kneece, Sharon Kneece, Nancy Taylor, Henry Harmon, Christina Elliott, Betty Outlaw, Grant Babin, Dave Hackley, Lauren Harmon, Rebecca West, Barbara Kneece, Todd Goff, Tamera Talbert, and Barry Rate.
