Columbia Metropolitan Airport begins curb front reconfiguration project

Posted

Individuals picking up passengers will now notice changes in the baggage claim loading zone at Columbia Metropolitan Airport. This is phase one of a three-phase curb front reconfiguration project.

This project is estimated to be completed in 60 days from its March 24 start. A new traffic pattern has been implemented and according to the press release, access to lot A will be closed and there will be directional signs to direct individuals.

The pedestrian walkway from the garage to the terminal and rental car returns will remain open.

“The loading zone and drive-up lanes in this area have long been a pain point for those picking up passengers,” said Gregg Hornsby, CAE’s interim president & CEO/CFO. “In reconfiguring this area, the curb front will extend the length of the terminal allowing for a more efficient and streamlined pickup process.”

The airport has hired four new airport safety officers. These new hires will patrol the upper drop-off area and the lower pickup area in baggage claim. They will assist individuals and help avoid congestion and backups with traffic.

“With the projected increase in passenger traffic coming this summer with the addition of both Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines, we are anticipating over 2700+ passengers a day on certain days of the week starting in May,” Kim Crafton, vice president of marketing and air service development, said in the press release. “Reconfiguring the curb front in the baggage claim loading zone ahead of this travel spike will ensure each passenger’s overall airport experience is safe and easy.”

Updates will be provided on the airport’s website.
