Columbia teacher's aide accused of duct-taping 4-year-old to desk

A Lexington County teacher's aide is accused of taping a student to their desk.

Olivia Michelle Murray, 25, is charged with cruelty to children after allegedly restraining a four-year-old with duct tape on March 1. Murray was working as a teacher’s aide at Seven Oaks Elementary, a Lexington-Richland District 5 school located in Columbia, according to a provided arrest warrant.

“Based on our investigation, Murray, who works as teacher’s aide, used duct tape to tape the student’s legs to a chair Wednesday while the teacher was out of the classroom,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon is quoted in a press release, “Murray told detectives the student had been moved to the back of the classroom for being disruptive and not listening.”

The warrant describes the child's actions as "flipping around and not listening to instruction."

Per the warrant, Murray restrained the student to a chair with duct tape from a classroom cabinet when the 4K teacher stepped away for a few minutes, with the 4K teacher corroborating the incident.

Murray was arrested Wednesday night and is currently being held in the Lexington County Detention Center, according to the department.

“At School District 5, we work hard to ensure a safe learning environment at our schools and work closely with law enforcement to make safety our top priority,” the district told the Chronicle in a statement. “Due to the alleged conduct, the individual is no longer employed with the district, and we are cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation. Because of the ongoing investigation, School District 5 will have no further comment at this time.”

A Facebook post from the sheriff’s department announcing the arrest has received more than 226 comments as of 11:50 a.m. March 2, most of which decried Murray’s actions.

“My four-year-old can't sit still and there are days school asks me come get him if he's more than a handful,” Stacey ONeal commented. “With that said, that's exactly what I expect them to do. If timeout and redirection and other measures they try don't work, then it's my job to intervene. At no point should any person duct tape him to a chair. “

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
