AROUND CAYCE, SPRINGDALE & WEST COLUMBIA

The Cayce Historical Museum held its Congaree Heritage Day of Unity last Saturday.

It was a learning experience for famiies that showcased Native American culture through dance, music, authentic craft demonstrations and storytelling.

Also taught were primitive skills such as flintknapping and pottery making. Another part of the day highlighted the central role of dance in native culture as Native Americans performed a traditional “Candy Dance” for children.

Congaree Heritage Day included reenactments from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. There were also free tours of the museum and its collection of more than 8,000 arrowheads. It is one of the largest arrowhead collections in the US.

The West Columbia Fire Department assisted Lexington County Fire Services at a residential fire Thursday morning. Due to the loss of electricity, the traffic signal was out at Sunset Boulevard and Northside Boulevard. The road was closed for a while.
