Authorities have identified a 37-year-old Cayce woman as the victim struck and killed by a car in an Aug. 23 hit-and-run crash.

Janyne Renee Mbeng, 37, was walking in the road when a vehicle struck her in the 1800 block of Frink Street in Cayce, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release Tuesday, Sept. 1.

“The driver of the vehicle that struck Ms. Mbeng did not stop at the scene or report the accident,” the coroner’s office said in the release.

Mbeng was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Cayce police are asking witnesses to come forward as detectives work to identify the driver involved. The Frink Street crash happened around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23.

“Our thoughts are first and foremost with the victim and her loved ones as they navigate this devastating loss,” Cayce Police Chief Bruce Wade said. “Our investigators are working diligently to identify the vehicle and driver responsible. We are asking anyone with information, no matter how small they may think it is, to come forward and help us bring answers and accountability to this family.”

Cayce Police Department investigators are working the case along with South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, Cayce police spokesperson Karly Shorter said in a news release.

Police say investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, collecting and analyzing evidence and pursuing leads to identify the vehicle and driver involved.

“The department is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have information that could assist investigators to contact law enforcement,” the release says. “Even information that may seem insignificant could help investigators piece together what happened.”
