Courage Center unveils new additions, services

Communal support continues to allow Lexington’s recovery community to reach more people.

The Courage Center recently unveiled its new basketball court and 900-squarefoot pavilion at its 4-acre property on Park Road.

The center provides highquality recovery support options that are peer-led, centrally located and offered at no-cost.

The new additions were funded through a Central Carolina Community Foundation Connected Communities grant, a one-time capital appropriation from Lexington County Council, and a Missions award from Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.

“The facilities will allow new opportunities for youth engagement and family connections to create healthy memories as they recover individually and together as families,” said Adrienne Bellinger, the center’s executive director.

The Courage Center, one of about 200 recovery community organizations in the nation, is organized to fill the gap in the community between government agencies and families.

The center embraces “multiple pathways to recovery” which includes an emphasis on peer-coaching and recovery support for young adults and families.

In August, 9 additional coaches were trained to work with parents and caregivers who have loved ones struggling with addiction.

“We’ve adopted a model of linking those struggling with individual or family substance misuse with those who have walked a similar path,” said Dr. Pam Imm, the center’s board chairperson.

“Many families live in fear and pain with little knowledge, support, or guidance on how to move forward in a healthy way. We always wanted to fill a niche that we know is desperately needed in this area.”

The Courage Center serves adolescents and young adults ages 15-26 in individual and group settings, and many will now benefit from outdoor and recreational activities.

The facilities will also be available to community partners and stakeholders to use for special activities.

The Courage Center has expanded its services into the Chapin area which are hosted at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church.

You can reach the center at (803) 369-3905 and www.couragecentersc.org .
