A fundraising initiative intended to provide Irmo area children of all abilities with an inclusive playground is in place.
The Town of Irmo announced plans for the Crossbuck Play Space at Rawls Creek Park on Feb. 20. It will be located in Rawls Creek Park at 1113 Friarsgate Blvd., a roughly 5-minute drive from downtown Irmo.
“This play space represents our commitment to making Irmo a place where every child feels seen, valued, and included,” Irmo Mayor Bill Danielson said in a press release. “Play should not have barriers. With the support of our community, we can create a space where children of all abilities learn, grow, and build friendships together.”
Plans for the Rawls Creek Park addition include ADA-accessible surfaces, adaptive swings and more, intended to provide a safe play space for kids with physical, cognitive and sensory challenges.
Locals who want to donate are directed to contact The Door Home Chair Stacey Atkinson at thedoorhome2019@gmail.com or call 803-422-8201.
The Door Home, according to its website through midlandsgives.org, is a nonprofit that collaborates with civic, governmental and faith-based organizations on community projects.
“The impact is seen in the lasting outcomes these collaborations bring, including volunteering at Friarsgate Park and Harbison Gardens Apartments, coordinating transportation for Seniors to visit Sharing God's Love, and engaging with Seniors on activities that meet their interests,” according to its website. “The goal is to visibly serve the community, engage with families and Seniors, inspire teens, and develop the next generation of servant leaders.”
Some other playgrounds with accessible play areas across Lexington and Richland counties include Wingard Park at 631 Old Chapin Rd. in Lexington, Leo’s Landing Inclusive Playground at the east entrance of Saluda Shoals Park at 6071 St. Andrews Rd. in Columbia and Carraway Park at 212 Hudson St. in West Columbia.
