Lexington School District 1 has a new learning space thanks to a donation from BB&T.

BB&T donated $50,000 toward the project which paid for classroom furniture, technology, teacher resources and storage dedicated to the IB program.

Lexington District 1 Educational Foundation and Lexington District 1’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme funded the creation of a new IB Learning Lab through to the donation.

LHS offers rigorous IB courses to students in their junior and senior years, since earning authorization as an IB World School in 2006.

The curriculum focuses on high academic standards, international understanding and citizenship, and second language proficiency.

New church location

Fresh Church has bought 20 acres on Johnson Marina Road in Chapin as a future site of their church. Construction is expected to begin in late 2020.

Southern Visions Real Estate sales associate Stan Mack represented the church.

New seafood restaurant

Nick’s Gyros and Seafood has opened a new location at 3260 Augusta Rd.

Their menu includes fried appetizers, gyros, wings and seafood.

They are open 10 am - 2 am, closed Mondays.

Women’s Club honor

The Woman’s Club of Cayce has nominated Ann Malpass for the General Federation of Women’s Club’s prestigious Jennie Award.

The Jennie is a national honor that recognizes extraordinary Woman’s Club members for lifetime personal excellence as volunteers within their clubs, their community and as family members.

A member of the Woman’s Club of Cayce for 46 years, Ann Malpass has chaired the Cayce Memorial Treelighting Ceremony for 36 years and initiated and chaired the Cayce Cares Christmas food drive for 16 years.

Irmo native leads FFA summit

Irmo native Austin Cathcart chaired the inaugural State Future Farmers of America Officer Candidate Summit in Winnsboro recently.

Austin, an alumnus of Spring Hill High School near Chapin and a former president of the Lexington-Richland School District 5 FFA Chapter, has served as president of the SC FFA Association and is the outgoing president of the Clemson University Collegiate FFA Organization.

Sponsors of the summit included the SC Farm Bureau, the SC Conservation Districts Foundation, Walter P. Rawl Farms, John W. Parris, Dr. David Frazier, Tarleton State College, South Carolina Advocates for Agriculture, and Dr. and Mrs. H. Wayne Beam.

State Agricultural Education Officials Billy Keels and Pat Earle attended the summit along with Jillian Lash, executive director of the SC FFA Association, and a number of agricultural educators who serve as FFA advisors.
